Scientists are calling on the manufacturing industry to reduce toxic emissions

An international research team has published a report in the British journal Scientific Reports, calling on the global manufacturing industry to use more sustainable and less toxic raw materials in the production process in order to reduce the "toxicological footprint" and combat global climate change.
The team, led by academics at the University of Sheffield, used data from the US Toxic Release Inventory to analyse the impact of toxic emissions. They found that many external factors affect toxic emissions, including patterns of economic recessions and recoveries, population growth, changes in total consumption, and production structures.
For example, the US reduced its "toxicological footprint" by 42 per cent between 1999 and 2006, largely as a result of the mining and quarrying industries reducing their levels of toxic emissions through technological upgrades and better waste management.
The researchers point out that carbon dioxide emissions have been monitored over time, and toxic emissions have a large impact on the environment, but the relevant tracking monitoring has been limited. This study will help to analyse how to reduce toxic emissions more efficiently in the future, especially given the impact of changes in emissions from the mining and quarrying industries, which need to be better regulated to facilitate their reduction.
Co-author Ian Rennie, a professor at Sheffield University, said the study highlighted the importance of understanding the impact of toxic chemical emissions and the need for global manufacturing to use more sustainable and less toxic raw materials for production, thereby reducing the pollution associated with the extraction of such materials.
